I’ve been working on getting the NATO phonetic alphabet down for a while now and have been using the linked PDF as my guide. Often I have to place phone orders by credit card, so I want to do my best to make sure the order is right.

Kinja'd!!!

What’s cool is it has a nice in-joke for us Archer fans. And since the new season starts tonight, I figure that I share.

If that scene isn’t the best one in the series it’s totally in the top 5.

The NATO phonetic alphabet is nothing but a capitalist dog whistle.

Until you do this and the people on the phone have no idea what you mean. How do you spell Tango. Your name gets spelled MikeAlphaLimaIndigo instead of Mali

How would one say “Danger Zone” in Nato phonetic?

I use this all the time. I had it memorized as a 7-year-old (dad is a pilot) but it was way too nerdy and useless back then. I actually find it's super useful with multinational calls, such as offshore call centers, because "N as in November" is better than "N as in Nancy" because odds are good that people around the world have heard the phonetic/NATO alphabet in some capacity before — not just whatever random word our gringo brains can muster on the fly :D

Memorizing this has been super helpful at work for me. Nothing quite as awkward as trying to stumble through VINs and part numbers without a set representative words.

As a pilot this is like a second language.

As is “tree” (three) and “niner” (nine)

I had the idea to check the differences between the NATO alphabet and the former RAF one in Wiki... and found this:

Enjoy!

Knowing the phonetic alphabet is a good life skill that few people know. Makes things effortless when giving users their passwords over the phone, dealing with credit card companies, support calls, etc.

I learned this when I was younger. I had to teach it to my mother when joined the police. I picked it up in a day or two, I mother however took over a month.

I can do it fast on the phone when ordering but have to really slow down for the person taking the order. Doh.

I was always confused how almost everyone uses it airlines to police and regular people on the phone but American police had a different system.

I’ve known it most of my life for that very reason! 73 from Kilo Juliet One Hotel (or, as my wife says, Kangaroos Jump One Height)

Nice! I got into it because of my dad (I’ve been licensed since 1989), but when I found that I could combine my radio and car hobbies at rallies, I was so there.

I have to use it all the time with VIN numbers and part numbers over the phone since I work in parts at a dealership. It is fun hearing what other people make up though when they don’t know proper.
